Mogwai – Remurdered [Listen]

mogwai

Scottish post-rock band Mogwai have announced a new studio album called Rave Tapes. This will be the follow up to their last album proper, 2011’s excellent Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will.

To precede the new album, the band have released the track Remurdered. The track continues the band’s push towards a more electronic sound with an 80s feel; complete with John Carpenter style synths punctuating the song over a pulsating bass line. The track has a brooding but also uplifting tone, similar to the mood of their tracks from last years soundtrack to the french television series Les Revenants.

Listen to Remurdered below:

The new album has been produced by Paul Savage, who also worked with the band on their previous albums Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will and Young Team.

Rave Tapes will be available on January 20th 2014 – released through Rock Action, the bands own label in the UK and through Sub Pop in the US. The Album is available to order through the bands own store at mogwai.sandbaghq.com and the track Remurdered can be downloaded for free at the bands website.

KHUSHI – Magpie [Listen + News]

I first heard this track on Adam’s blog, songsfortheday a few days ago and it’s since gained a high play count on my iTunes. It’s also become quite popular since I posted it on Listen Up! a cool new website from the creator of the brilliant BIRP monthly playlists. Now that I’ve given away where I find all my music, let’s bring our focus back to KHUSHI.

Khushi is launching his long overdue EP next Tuesday (8th October). The event is happening at the Hoxton Bar & Grill, click here for details. I recommend anyone who’s free that evening to come by and check it out. As you can tell from the track below, it’s going to be very good.

Typhoon – White Lighter [News + Listen]

Typhoon, the 11 piece band known for creating a big sound while maintaining an intimate level of storytelling have just announced their new album, White Lighter set to be released August 20th. Their previous album Hunger and Thirst released last year stirred a lot of excitement, in particular their track CPR / Claws Pt. 2 was greatly commended, and is a personal favorite. They have pre-released a track from the new album called Young Fathers which is very enjoyable and hints that the new album is going to be a goodie.

Fuck Buttons

Fuck Buttons are finally back with a new album. Out 22nd of July in the UK (23rd for the US) the new record is titled Slow Focus and follows the brilliant 2009 release Tarot Sport; a wonderful building wall of distortion, pounding rhythms and blissful electronics that was backed by one of the greatest live experiences I have ever had. Temples – Colours To Life [Watch]

Back at the beginning of April we briefly covered neo-psychedelic rockers Temples and their rather magnificent single Shelter Song. Martin wrote, “The songs are louder, clearer and chocked full of instantly catchy hooks; unashamedly pulling in retro influences from acid era Byrds to (dare I say it) The Beatles – all brought up to date with some booming, breakbeat-esque drumming.” Now roll on a month and a bit and we can follow that up with their brilliant new single Colours To Life, due out 24th June. Gold Panda – Brazil [Listen]

Gold Panda

Finally here it is! Without further ado I present you with Brazil, the first single from Gold Panda’s upcoming album Half Of Where You Live. After January’s Trust EP left many salivating for the expected full-length follow up to 2010’s brilliant Lucky Shiner we finally have something to sink our teeth into and a date to pencil into the calendars for that very follow up.

Brazil is hypnotic, full of detail and a joy to listen to. Without a doubt Gold Panda through and through and while not a huge leap from previous material, that’s fine by me. Not many artists have that perfect balance between catchy songwriting and pure experimental sounding electronic bliss. If the album follows suit, fan’s will have nothing to worry about and it’ll be another wonderful record from one of Britain’s current finest electronic musicians.

Pre-order Half Of Where You Live over on the Wichita Recordings website

Additionally there’s a string of live dates coming up, I’ve been before myself and it’s well worth a look in. more details over on the Gold Panda website.

The first single Around the Block is already available as a free download from Pretty Lights’ website and is much in the trend of recent Pretty Lights tracks with glitchy electronic flourishes, deep bass and big beats; however it also returns to a slower more hip-hop focused sound with vocals from Talib Kweli. Temples – Shelter Song [Listen]

Temples

I’m a great fan of new takes on older music styles; recently I’ve been enjoying the resurgence in popularity of the neo-psychedelic sound, spearheaded by the success of groups like Tame Impala and The Amorphous Androgynous. Temples are a band that have recently caught our attention – since then, the single Shelter Song and its flipside Prisms have been on heavy rotation here at Universal Wax towers. Continue reading

Woodkid – Boat Song (Kulkid Remix) [Listen & Download]

kulkid

Hot on the heels of the release of The Golden Age, the debut album from Woodkid – we have a neat remix of the track Boat Song by French DJ and producer Kulkid.

Listen to the remix here:

Kulkid, whom according to his own bio, was born in the forest and was raised by animals – has upped the pace and sound of the original piano track to create a punchy/upbeat new house sound that complements the melody of the original recording nicley.

The track is available as a free download here.

Its also worth having a look at Kulkid’s Soundcloud page, where remixes of Bon Iver and the XX are up for grabs.
