Once a year, fashion industry bigwigs, celebrities and glamour personalities gather in New York City to attend the Met Gala. Probably the most famous and exclusive fashion gala in the world, hosted by Vogue boss Anna Wintour, attracts international interest every year. But what is behind the Met Gala and is it really a must-attend event for the fashion world or just another glamorous spectacle?
The Met Gala, officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit, serves as a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and also marks the opening of the institute’s annual fashion exhibition. Each year there is a specific theme as a source of inspiration for the guests’ creations. In 2018, the theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”.
