Darkstar the northern english electronic music trio return with their new track Timeaway from the forthcoming album News From Nowhere. The group rose to prominence with the 2009 track Aidy’s Girl Is a Computer which was featured on the influential Hyperdub Records compilation 5: Five Years of Hyperdub. The group’s unique sound blended the style of the emerging dubstep movement with an uplifting melodic synth pop edge. Continue reading →
Fans of minimalist dubstep will no doubt be very exited that Glasgow based producer Koreless has finally released another track. If you have never heard of Lewis Roberts AKA Koreless before, then you would file him next to James Blake, Mount Kimbie and Four Tet in your record collections. His debut 12” was released last year on Pictures Music and is now considered quite a collectable as both tracks on that record have been very highly rated ever since their release, and many people, myself included, have been eagerly awaiting new tracks from him.
Finally late last year, Jamie xx featured a new track in his BBC Essential Mix. That track has now finally had a digital and vinyl release. It is aptly called “Lost In Tokyo”, as I imagine it’s the perfect music to listen to while cruising round Tokyo on a night bus. The vinyl is being released on Jacques Greene’s Vase label and his remix of Lost In Tokyo is on the B-side. You can stream the original track below along with the mix that Koreless did for The Boiler Room, which is one of my favourite Boiler Room mixes and contains both the tracks of his debut 12”.
The long awaited Burial EP Kindred is finally with us and is now available over on the Hyperdub store to stream and purchase. What’s evident from a quick spin of the three tracks is the evolution of Bevan’s sound from his previous works. This could be attributed to collaborations with both Four Tet & Thom York, and Massive Attack last year, whose influences creep into the new tunes. It’s a thicker, polished and darker sounding EP with more presence than previous Burial tracks which have tended to verge more on the laid back side despite being full of tension and atmosphere. The latter is still present but this bolder edge works well and the latter two tracks, Loner and Ashtray Wasp stand out in particular against previous Burial tracks. It’ll be interesting to see where Will Bevan takes this sound for a full length follow up, it’s clear he’s not afraid to evolve and embrace other genres of electronic music, it’s been a long time since the brilliant Untrue and hopefully we wont be waiting too much longer…
Tonight is the launch of a new EP by London based artist, Samuel Howard aka Halls. This will be his third release to date. His music is ambient, electronic and often has a sparse dubstep beat. For me, his sound is very engaging, I think it must be the ambient soundscapes that drift me off slightly into a psychedelic day-dream.
The launch is taking place at the hipster hive, Shacklewell Arms in East London. Doors open at 8pm. Click here to order your copy of the EP. I’m quite excited to hear him play live, his previous work is quite beautiful. Here’s the link to the Facebook event.
After a strong debut EP back in November and a track featured on Ministry of Sounds compilation Adventures in Dubstep & Beyond, Manchester ambient/downtempo/2 step (I get lost with these genre crossovers sometimes) producer Adam W Flynn, AKA Modepth, has already been busy throwing some new tracks up onto soundcloud for his growing fanbase to devour. This latest one Silence Over the Wadis caught my attention especially as it builds on Modepths sound from the Dusk EP perfectly, pushing the bar in almost every way.
Soaked in atmosphere with crystal clear production and a delicately composed drum track this is one piece of music to turn all the lights off and listen undistracted on some decent headphones. I’m pretty excited to hear what’s around the corner for Modepth and after a live London debut back in November I’m hoping for a full-length follow up that really develops on the solid foundations Flynn’s already laid. Modepth has a habit of chopping and changing tracks on his soundcloud so catch it soon before it’s removed!
