Saturday’s ambient sounds [Listen]

I’ve recently been revisiting some of my favorite ambient artists and making some new discoveries. I thought I’d do a little roundup of what I’ve been daydreaming to for the last week.

Rhian Sheehan & Helios

Keith Kenniff AKA Helios released an album of his previously released songs that have been remixed by a variety of artists. Halving The Compass is one of my all time favourite Helios tracks, and was recently remixed by Rhian Sheehan, an award winning musician from New Zealand. Rhian Sheehan put the ambient scene in awe with his 2008 album, Standing in Silence. I genuinely can’t think of a better composer to remix this track. The pacing and intimate sounds of the piano are perfect.

Over the past year or so Kieran Hebden AKA Four Tet has been releasing a number of 12” singles via his own Text record label. For the benefit of those without a turntable he has decided to bring these tracks together in album form. This new collection of tracks is called Pink (artwork above). It has been released digitally via Hebden’s Text label today, and is available from all the usual places. There will be a CD release of the album too, although this is restricted to Japan only. New Four Tet – Moma [Listen]

I’m a big fan of charity, especially when it’s for a really good cause. Four Tet has posted the track Moma which is his contribution to the We Are The Works In Progess compilation to raise money for Japan and it’s recovery post-tsunami.

As with most of Kieran’s music under his Four Tet monicker it’s a colourful and bright track with plenty of charm that builds beautifully.

The compilation drops on the 10th January 2012 and all proceeds benefit JAPAN SOCIETY EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND & ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY. It’s a more than worthy cause and just look at that list of contributors! You could do a lot worse than having this compilation in your collection.
